What is Osteoarthritis?

osteoarthritis diagnosis

Osteoarthritis is the typical degenerative arthritis that is common in older people. One in ten Canadians over the age of sixty, both men and women, currently have the condition. It occurs when the cartilage in the joints begins to break down and erode.

Cartilage is a strong elastic tissue layer that helps to protect the ends of bones from rubbing or jostling together as a joint is used. When it erodes, the ends of the bones come into contact with each other, grinding against each other whenever the joint moves. This causes pain and damage to the bones, which may even begin to deposit new growth in response to the friction, leading to joints developing a bonier look and causes osteoarthritis.

Disability duration

Osteoarthritis can occur in any joint, but is most common in the hands, hips, and knees. Primary osteoarthritis is that which occurs with no direct cause being evident. It typically affects multiple joints throughout the body. Secondary osteoarthritis develops after an injury or infection in the joint, which damages the cartilage.

Osteoarthritis Symptoms

Symptoms of osteoarthritis include morning stiffness that gets better with movement. The pain is usually least after rest, and increases as the joint is used. So it can be a balancing act between pain and stiffness. Both can make it difficult to perform simple daily tasks. There may also be swelling and inflammation in the affected joints. In advanced cases, painful locking of the joint may occur.

Unfortunately, osteoarthritis can lead to serious disability, including impairment in the ability to dress oneself, the ability to use utensils for eating and cooking, and the ability to walk for even short distances without resting. It can become difficult to get in and out of chairs and vehicles.

Preventing Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is often thought of as inevitable, that it is simply a part of normal aging. That is not the case, although it is indeed very common and age is one of the risk factors. Other risk factors for osteoarthritis are a family history, carrying excess weight, and injuries. Those with another form of arthritis, such as gout or rheumatoid arthritis, also have a higher risk of developing osteoarthritis.

Those living with osteoarthritis may be eligible to receive the Disability Tax Credit. The maximum tax credit is equal to about a $1600 Canadian per year on disability, so it can be a great relief to those who are facing financial worries due to medical costs, medications, and other things necessitated by the condition. A physician completes the required form which describes the ways in which the applicant’s abilities to perform daily tasks is impaired. If the disabled does not have taxable income, the tax credit can be applied to a family member who is supporting him or her.
